Medicine & Magic

The end of 2018 wrapped up with an incredible bang for me. I entered into a 10 day Shamanic Breathwork facilitator training on the night of the winter solstice in the Lotus studio at the Yoga Barn in Bali, Indonesia. Those 10 days gave me the deepest insights, the most profound healing, and enough inspiration to last me the rest of my lifetime.

Half way through the training, I was reminded of one of Mahatma Gandhi’s most famous quotes:

Be the change that you wish to see in the world.

The quote spontaneously was morphed inside of me and what came out was:

Do the healing you wish others would do.

Every one of us walks through this human experience collecting hurts given to us by others. Someone said brutally hurtful things that left our soul scarred or someone refused to love us in the way that we really needed or someone tried their best but their best just wasn’t good enough. And every one of us has reflected on those that have hurt us and said things like, “I wish they would deal with their feelings better,” or, “If only they would take the initiative to actually do something different for once,” or, “If being in a relationship is so hard, learn how to do it better!”

When I thought about Gandhi’s quote, I understood that his concept of change, is my concept of healing. If we heal those parts of ourselves that have been wounded, we instantly become the change that this world needs. Every time we catch ourselves wishing that someone else would respond differently, act differently, show up differently, that’s our opportunity to take a compassionate, non-judgmental glance at ourselves and shine a soft light on our hurts that haven’t been tended to in a while and do the healing that we wish those others would do for themselves.

One of my fellow training/tribe/pack mates said on our last day of the training, “Everyone has medicine and magic.” Finding yours will lead the way for others to find their own.

  1. If we can all tap into our own magic within and then encourage and teach others how to reach down and tap into their own magic to heal themselves that magic will start spreading out to not only ourselves but to our family, community, nation and the world! Love, compassion and empathy can change our hearts and minds and make this world a beautiful place where we look after each other, support and lift each other up, and think of everyone as part of our extended family! Imagine how our spirits will soar!!!!!!!
